Copilot Studio Agents Begin Encountering "OpenAIModelTokenLimit" Errors on 4 February 2026

Sometime overnight between 3 and 4 February 2026 (US time) a chatbot agent built using Copiliot Studio began returning "OpenAIModelTokenLimit" errors which were not being encountered before in pre-release testing or in production. These errors do not occur for all queries and can sometimes (but not always) be worked around by having the user clear their session state. We're not grounding in anything I'd think is too big or tricky (a few SharePoint sites, Confluence, one web site, and a few specific files).

I've tried moving from GPT-4.1 to the other GTP-5 models without making a noticeable difference in the error frequency. Since everything was working the night before, it feels like something behind the scenes at Microsoft change overnight. And, it appears, we're not the only ones to notice this issue (Too much data to handle - OpenAIModelTokenLimit | Copilot Studio and SharePoint - Microsoft Q&A).

Has anyone else encountered this situation in the last couple of days?

Update: as of 7 February 2026, like a fog in the morning sunlight, our errors have now evaporated and our agent is working as it did at the start of the week. My thanks to some unknown folks at Microsoft who silently fixed something that wasn't (officially) broken.

Update II: As of 13 April 2026, it's back.

Same problem here. Everything is PAYG and we still hit limits.

As of 13 April 2026, it's back. 8-(

For others: I don't think this is (at least in my case) a matter of running out of Copilot credits, because if it were then all of our prompts would return an error and this is not the case. Feels more like nerfing, although Anthropic is the company facing nerfing questions as of late Is Anthropic 'nerfing' Claude? For reference, the problem is still opened at Microsoft -> 6066935 | Centre d’administration de Power Platform. However, there is no errors in our logs in the last month.

Has anyone managed to solve this problem? I see in the search that my files are duplicated and that's why I get the error. It worked fine before.
