NOT ABLE TO SEE EVENTS IN APPLICATION INSIGHTS

(0) ShareShare

I am trying to get application insights of a copilot studio Agent

Steps to Reproduce -:
1. Create an agent
2. Create a infinite loop topic to create an error.
3. Create an application insight in portal azure
4. Add the connection string of application insight in portal azure to the agent in settings -> Advanced -> application insights -> connection string.
5. Save and publish the agent
6. Trigger the topic like 'make an error',

Expected Outcome:
Inside portal azure application insights inside our application insight,  we see the events.

This is not happening, apart from that i am seeing no data inside the application insight, not even inside Workbooks

Considerations -
Enhance transcripts Include node-level details in transcripts in disabled.

Thanks for sharing the detailed steps and screenshots.

After reviewing the scenario, this behavior is expected by design in Microsoft Copilot Studio.

Currently, integration with Azure Application Insights in Copilot Studio is limited to conversation-level telemetry, such as:

    • User and bot messages
    • Topic triggers
    • Explicitly defined custom telemetry events

It does not automatically capture or emit:

    • Runtime exceptions (e.g., infinite loop scenarios)
    • Internal orchestration errors
    • Node-level execution failures

In the scenario described (creating an infinite loop to force an error), the platform handles such conditions internally (e.g., safeguards/timeouts), and these are not surfaced as telemetry events in Application Insights.

Additionally, telemetry is only generated when supported events are triggered. If no supported telemetry events occur, Application Insights may appear empty.

    Recommendations

    • Enable “Enhance transcripts” for better debugging visibility within Copilot Studio
    • Use custom telemetry events inside topics if you need to track specific failures or checkpoints
    • Rely on built-in analytics and transcripts for troubleshooting agent behavior

@AP-26031104-0   I have tried the  custom telemetry event as well,  it does not show up as well as the topics, even they dont show up

     ,

According to the official Microsoft documentation on Copilot Studio telemetry, Application Insights integration only emits supported events such as user/bot messages, topic triggers, and custom telemetry events. Infinite loops and internal errors are not automatically sent to App Insights — that part is by design.

If neither topics nor custom telemetry events show up at all, that usually means the telemetry pipeline isn’t configured correctly. Make sure you’ve added the full connection string of your Application Insights resource in the agent settings, then saved and republished the agent. After triggering your topic, run a simple query in App Insights (e.g., customEvents | where name == "YourEventName") to confirm it’s being logged.

The official docs on this are here:

     ,
I had gone through the official documentation, The full connection string is present, saved and republished,  still the same result.

I am not exactly sure where the telemetry pipeline could go wrong, The workbook is also empty.

I tried some queries for the logs but empty results

     ,
To further isolate the issue, please try the following:

Option A — Recreate Application Insights resource

    • Create a new Application Insights instance in Azure
    • Reconfigure the connection string in the agent
    • Save and republish the agent
    • Retest telemetry

This helps eliminate any potential hidden configuration or resource-level issues.

Option B — Validate environment type

    • Confirm whether the agent is deployed in a Dataverse for Teams environment or a restricted tenant setup
    • In certain environments, telemetry flow to Application Insights may be limited or unsupported

Option C — Raise a Microsoft Support ticket
If the issue persists after the above steps:

    • This indicates a potential backend or telemetry pipeline issue
    • As per expected behavior, basic telemetry should be available once configured

I have tried option A, no success.

    In option B
    1. Does the agent need to be deployed in an environment with dataverse.

I have limited access to power platform admin, I can confirm that no DLP was setup.
Could you let me know any places where I can ask the admin power platform team to  troubleshoot the issue.
