Thomas Rice - Building Community
Thomas Rice has spent more than two decades leading complex projects, solving problems, and inspiring others through his dedication, expertise, and generosity. Today, as a Senior IT Application Project Manager at EMCOR Facilities Services, he is known not only for his deep technical mastery—spending “14 hours a day in the Power Platform, building things”—but for his passion for helping others grow. But Thomas’s journey into community leadership started long before his current role. It began with a spark of curiosity and a desire to connect.

Falling in Love With the Technology—and the People
Years ago, Thomas discovered Power BI, a moment that changed everything. “I kind of fell in love with Power BI,” he recalls. His enthusiasm pushed him to start a Power BI User Group. While the group initially struggled to gain traction, Thomas never lost his drive. This early setback didn’t stop him. Instead, it became the beginning of a new chapter.

A Turning Point: Finding the Right Partners
During a workshop years later, Thomas happened to sit beside Craig Gregory—an encounter that shifted everything. “We started talking about getting a User Group together and we both looked at each other and realized, that’s weird. I really want to do that.”

Super User, Super Impact
For four seasons, Thomas has proudly served as a Microsoft Power Platform Community Super User—a role he describes with a smile: “A super user is really, you know, a superhero.”
To Thomas, it’s about more than answering forum questions. It’s about helping people when they need it most.

“I spend so much time in the Power Platform, and every day someone reaches out to me and says, ‘Tommy, you will not believe this. I was in tears… I was working on this for days… and you saved the day.’ - and I’m like, I didn’t do anything except share my knowledge.” For Thomas, empowering others is its own reward.

Why Community Matters
“There is that one missing component and that is getting together in person… it’s really making those in-city connections with other members of the community,” he explains. “The User Groups help cure maybe a little bit of loneliness… we actually get to meet people and laugh with them.”

His vision for User Groups is simple but powerful: bring in inspiring speakers. Create meaningful experiences. Build friendships. “When we have an amazing speaker, an amazing demo, they’re hooked. They become our net promoter and bring their friends and co-workers.” This philosophy fuels everything he does.

The Work Behind the Scenes
Running a User Group is no small task. “It’s a little part-time job,” Thomas admits. “The coordinating, the presentations, the speakers, the directions, the ‘hey, I can’t log in’…” But the effort is worth it. “You build it, and now everybody wants to help… They ask, ‘How can I be a part of this?’” As the group grows, Thomas and his fellow organizers dream of reaching 50–100 regular attendees—and building a sustainable structure with volunteers and sponsors.

A Leader, Lifelong Learner, and Veteran
Outside of community-building, Thomas is a recognized expert with:
  • 20 Microsoft certifications
  • PMP, CSM, and CSPO credentials
  • Experience as a Power Platform Solutions Architect and SME
  • A background as a proud U.S. Air Force veteran
  • A passion for mentoring and helping others discover their potential
His approach to learning is simple: stay curious, stay committed, and keep going. “I tell my friends—it’s like a Rubik’s cube. Once you get going, you can’t stop. Consistency is key… do it because you love it.”

Looking Ahead
Thomas’s story is one of resilience, collaboration, and heart. Whether he’s solving a Power Automate puzzle, building a community event, or helping someone who’s stuck on a problem, he brings the same energy and generosity to everything he does. Thomas Rice reminds us that community isn’t just about technology. It’s about people—showing up, helping one another, and growing together.
