Hello,
I am in the beginning stages of proposing Power Platform to the company I work for. I fully understand it’s benefits but without something tangible to show (specific to this company and how it operates) I think it will fall flat on it’s face…as it did as the previous company I worked for. I work in a manufacturing industry and showing example automations such as “update a twitter post” would get me laughed out the door or most likely fired. Last week I showed someone how to create a desktop shortcut to a spreadsheet, so the level of computer awareness is low here and something like Power Platform is so far over people’s heads it would knock the international space station out of orbit.
I’m taking a new approach and I would like to develop a couple preliminary apps, BP flows and automations that would greatly improve our everyday processes. If I can get enough buy-in, maybe I can get some training or hire someone with knowledge.
I’ve dabbled in Power Apps/Power Automate/Teams for a while, but there are some questions I’ve always had that I can never clearly understand the answers to. I’m hoping someone can help me get off on the right foot so when I need to explain how it all works, I can have the answers without looking like a fool. I want to try to be organized right from the start.
Implementation Questions:
- Where do I begin? What is my first step? Should I setup environments first? (Such as: Development, Testing, Live?) Is that the “intent” of an environment???
- Is Dataverse just a central location for storing our files/data (similar to our server, but accessible anywhere not just from a local computer)? Are Sharepoint sites contained within the Dataverse, or an entirely separate entity?
- Where should data/files be stored? When should I use Sharepoint vs. OneDrive vs. Dataverse? (My assumption is OneDrive is intended for your own personal files only)
- Would it make sense to have one Sharepoint site for the entire company and all data is stored within it? I could see this making permissions a nightmare as each folder/app, etc. would have to be managed. Would it make more sense for there to be a site for each “user group” (department)? (Sales, Engineering, Shop Floor, etc.)
- If there is an app or file that will be used by multiple user groups, where should that app data be stored? In the company site? Does it matter as permission will be “shared” when the app is shared???
- Can I setup a user group hierarchy somewhere to manage permissions??
Thank you in advance!
