Hi,
I’m investigating different solutions to help us choose a new program.
Shortly we need something that is almost programming, but that does not require hardcore programming skills. I should be able to write some code, but I would be the only one, and that would be too woundable.
For that reason, I am looking at the Power platform. I have tried Power Apps, which I guess can do what we need. I have moved on to Power Pages, which seems great, but I am a little unsure of the data connection possibilities, and I cannot find much information.
Is it correct that you can only access data in Dataverse?
We have a lot of different data (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, Excel workbooks, MySQL, csv…)
For Power Apps, it seems like you can access Oracle data. I cannot see that it is possible in Power Pages – is it?
Can you add some sort of connector – either directly to Power Pages, or to get the Oracle data into Dataverse (the same for Excel, csv and so on)? Only read-access is needed, but it needs to get updated data, when a button is clicked.
If we cannot access our data, then Power Apps might be a better idea (if it can do what we need).
Actually, I think it is just because Power Pages are relatively new. They are always improving and so on. You can check new connector coming here: Power Pages announcements as Microsoft Build
Thanks for your reply.
If it’s difficult or less secure to get to our data, then it’s not the right solution. I did like the interface of Power Pages – and the fact that you should be able to open the code in a light version of visual studio. Dataverse looks fine, and using them together seems easy. Sadly our data is just located in many different places (which is never going to be changed).
I can see that Power Apps have more “out of the box” integrations. A direct Oracle connector or ODBC that could be used for our Oracle data. Also access to OneDrive and SharePoint, where different Excel sheets or csv dumps are located (or could be moved to).
Just for my knowledge: Is Power Pages more strict with the connections, because it can be used externally where Power Apps is used internally?
Hi,
Yes. You can access data from Dataverse. Power Pages offers out of box components that you can add List, Forms and other components connect to you tables on Dataverse.
You can also access it using FetchXML and Liquid. It would work like a query to your dataverse and bringing all information that you need.
You can also make call to API using Javascript (not so secure as it is in the front end level) or in another level by using C# adding as component in your system.
But I think the best way is using Dataverse.
