Write Sharepoint List Items to Word Document

We have a Sharepoint List (not a library) with items that we want written to a Word document. We used When Item is Created as the trigger; Get Items and Get File Content; Create File based on the Word template; and Update File Properties. It passes Flow Checker; and runs each time a new item is added to the List. It creates a new document based on the template using the title of the Item as the file name.
Please note: we're unable to use the premium connectors.
Where it fails is, the new Word document displays an error message: "Word found unreadable content"
I can only assume this is why there are premium connectors.
So far, I've reviewed Power Platform forums and a couple of dozen other websites; but I'm not finding our exact problem. I've seen something that leads me to believe converting the List to XML might be a potential solution, but I'm not familiar with XML ... yet....
Any thoughts on simple ways, without premium connectors, to take items from a List and write them to a Word document?

If you use a document library instead of a Sharepoint list, then you can take advantage of Sharepoint document templates and use a custom content type. You have to use xml mapping to map the document properties to the word document using content controls.
