Building a portal with PowerPages

We are looking to redevelop our portal. The portal will be used externally by schools to access content, book a workshop, manage/track teaching journeys, complete a self-assessment task (in multiple choice questions) to inform training gaps, etc. I am new to PowerPages and feeling a bit loss in terms of where to start. The Portal will be developed by a 3rd party developer from an agency so we expect them to customise the templates in PowerPages to make them work for our solution.  I am wondering what's the best way to brief the developer - what other PowerPages tools to include/consider. All feedback & suggestions where to start would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

    Hi @My365,

is your current portal running as a PowerPage or developed differently (Example: React with SQL as backend etc.)?

PowerPages often use dataverse as a backend solution which you could use to easily create forms and views. If you want to use another datasource that's fine as well.

I would start by defining the design and you will see which components you should use.

PowerPages usually contain content (text, images etc.) forms (which you can fill out and submit) and views (to display saved data). For the backend you can use a datasource (mostly dataverse) with power automate if needed (it probably is).

Your developed should be able to tell you what's needed and what time is needed spending on it. Example 5x Forms for x hours/days etc.

If you need additional help feel free to contact me directly or specify your questions a bit more.

Hi @Lucas001 , Apologies for the delayed reply.

From what I know the current portal was developed using MS PowerPortal, it was developed years ago before PowePages were released.

We plan to rebuild it using PowerPortal and talking to an agency, they advised we build it in PowerPages.

I am not familiar with PowerPages and not sure why we needed PowerPages and not using PowrPortal instead.

Our portal will be used by teachers (external stakeholder) and they will login to the portal to track their teaching journey, complete self assessment tasks, and monitor their progress over time via analytics (we use Dynamics365).

What I don't understand is whether PowerPages is a default tool to build the frontend of a portal or can we use PowerPortal to achieve the same outcome.

We also use Amazon S3 and wondered if it will work or do we need to use Azure or Dataverse instead.

I hope I am making some sense 🙂 thank you.

    Hi @My365,

let's say to not make things difficult, PowerPages are the new PowerPortals and there are updates coming all the time. But for your understanding it functions the same way and the frontend creation is also working the same way as before. There are just some features and updates which changed functionality and some other things.

For PowerPages you will need at least an evironment which has dataverse enabled, including the needed licenses etc. You can on the other hand safe your data in Amazon S3, but if you want to go with PowerPages it is really recommended to use dataverse for the backend. A lot of functions, forms, views etc. are supported directly from within PowerPages. If you are using Dynamics anyway, PowerPages and Dataverse would fit as additional products.

If you need additional information, try to specify what exactly you need and want to do. But I guess you are about to do that with your agency anyway.
