When Does Custom Code Break the Power Pages Studio Experience?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been using Power Pages Studio for some time and am running into issues when adding custom code. At what point does custom code start interfering with the low-code GUI experience in Power Pages? For example, does introducing Liquid templates, JavaScript, or third-party frameworks like Bootstrap break the ability to continue using the visual/low-code development features in the studio?

I’m particularly curious if there are certain types of customizations (e.g., using Liquid or adding too much custom JavaScript) that trigger these issues and make the GUI development tools less usable or break entirely.

What’s the best way to balance custom code with keeping the low-code/GUI features functional? Any advice or insights on how to avoid disrupting the Studio environment would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Interesting, I was facing similar question when i went beyond low code and started customizing.

In Power Pages, the lifecycle of developing a custom web experience involves several stages, and understanding how custom UI code (such as Liquid templates, JavaScript, and CSS) interacts with the platform is important.
-Liquid templates are used for server-side rendering.
-JavaScript can have a more profound impact on the page, especially if it manipulates DOM elements directly or interacts with Power Pages' own scripts
-Adding third-party frameworks like Bootstrap for styling can cause layout conflicts with the built-in design system of Power Pages.
    - If you introduce custom code, try to keep it modular and isolated from the core platform logic.

Testing: After each significant custom change, test to ensure that the GUI remains functional.

    OP,

I have been struggling with this for a while.  I make my own web templates in power pages management app (PPMA).  When I go back to Power Pages Design Studion (PPDS), I can not edit any of the template.  Which is weird, because if I add a control/component in the PPDS, I can edit it in PPDS.  But not when I type the code in.  It's weird, because when you add items in PPDS, all it does is add code into PPMA.

Obviously, it is doing something else when editing in PPDS than PPMA.

I would LOVE to know what to add to my code or settings to allow editing of custom code in PPDS.

The Design Studio is basically a cached version of what is in the Web Template. Web Pages etc etc  tables that you see in the Power Pages Management App.
If you make a change directly from the Power Pages Management App and you have the Designer open, then you need to re-Sync from inside the designer - to pull your updates into the Designer.

Similarly, you can make changes in the Code Editor (VS Code online) within the Designer - typically when you do this you will be prompted to sync the changes. If you open the code editor for the Web Page in the designer, you will find the other objects like Web Templates etc in the left hand column.

One thing you have to watch out for when working in both the Designer & the Management App at the same time is Autosave. As you can make a change from the Management App, save it, and then touch something in the Designer and overwrite your change as the designer autosaves on every update. Similar issues can arise (but less frequent) if you leave the item open in the Management App, whilst and after making changes in the designer,

Hi, I have found that when using liquid to do conditional things is when the studio breaks. Since it runs server side and technically is not running in full mode when previewing the site in design studio.
