Premium SQL Connector in a Solution

So, I am trying to move all of my previously developed apps over to a solution base so I can move them between environments.  I will have to say this is not very intuitive and seems cumbersome to do retroactively.  I have managed to add the canvas app and the SharePoint site for data sources, and it appear to be working well.

Now I need to add an SQL Connection, to a read-only database, to the solution.  The only way I see to do this is using the connection reference.  I have added that information but when I import into my other environment, the connection does not work.  I have to remove and recreate.

Has anyone else moved SQL Connections in a canvas app between environments in a solution?
