Route to working with Power Platform

Hello,

I am working at a Charity and have become fascinated with what power apps can do, have been teaching myself as we have access to it at work and I am also working towards my PL-200 certificate.

I previously worked with Sharepoint Designer (circa 2011), worked as a BI Developer for a couple of years, took a career break, did some training in software engineering, never made it into an engineering role and now I wonder if I might be able to find work doing something with Power Platform. Looking for some encouragement and advice.

If anyone is in a similar position, please reach out. I'd also be looking for some opportunities to work on voluntary projects.

Thanks!
Nicola

    Hello Nicola,

It's truly encouraging to see new individuals taking an interest in the platform. At our company, we've welcomed several team members who, despite not having an engineering degree, secured roles thanks to their passion and commitment to developing their skills. This is a testament to the fact that many organizations value drive and initiative just as much as formal education in some cases. The opportunities within the platform are definately there for those who are motivated to learn and grow.

I would recommed the PowerUp program as a first step, which is a nice first step to dip your toes into the platform: Microsoft Power Up Program for career switchers

Feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn (Available on my profile) or just shoot me a message here on the forums if you feel like it or have some questions and ill try to answer as best as I can.

I wish you all the best.

     Hi Nicola,

First of all Thanks for speaking out. Career breaks are hard. Subsequent upskilling takes a lot of effort and when we see the jobs ecosystem in nowadays economy , its just adds to your woes. Let me try to help you by creating a structured plan.
Step 1- Register for Microsoft power up program(https://powerup.microsoft.com/) -  already guided you on that. A big shout out to him because he is a super user and hence he rocks :)
If you get selected great , if you don't - 3 words- DO NOT WORRY :) youtube has got your back.

Step 2- If you have a windows 10 or 11 laptop, Power Automate desktop is free for you. Make the free versions of Power Automate, Power Apps and Power BI your sandboxes. Practice, Practice, Practice......

Step 3- There are superb detailed videos on power platform  from @mspowerplatform and tons of other individual creators including end to end courses with practical hands on learning.

Step 4- This is a great community to be a part of and all your relevant questions, queries, roadblocks and bottlenecks can be discussed , answered and resolved here.

Step 5- Once you feel that you are proficient enough on this platform i suggest you take one or both of these certifications:-
Step 6- Join the MS Power Platform Experts community on Upwork- https://community.powerplatform.com/upwork/
and hopefully land a great job and have a rewarding career.
Note-Keep learning and updating your Linkedin profile. Stay active in this community and hopefully aspire to become a super user and then an MVP. ( i have the same dream :D )
Last but not the least - one step at a time. It will take some time but you'll get there. I am a newbie and this is my roadmap so actually i am practicing what i am preaching.
All the best. Hope you do great. I believe in you.

    Good evening!

As others have said, the Microsoft Power Platform is an incredibly powerful tool if once you harness it's power. Luckily, knowledge and training is very easy to come by with the Power Platform.

As others have said, if you haven't yet, please check out the Microsoft Power Up Platform - I graduated from it about 2 months ago and it has been a massive help in growing my understanding of the platform, what it can do and utilising it in the day job too. Not only that, should you graduate, you will also be given an exam voucher to use for the PL-900 or PL-200 exams. I've recently passed the PL-900 with the help from the Power Up Programme.

I find that actually 'doing' helps me learn, luckily the Power Platform has you covered too. It's possible to create your own free Azure Tenant along with your very own PowerApps Developer instance which gives you most production features for free.
