New list layout doesn't offer ability to add and configure a filter

When I use the existing list layout:

I am able to add and configure filters:

When I use the 'new and improved' list layout:

I am no longer able to add and configure filters:

This is a significant loss of functionality.  Is there any other way of adding the ability to filter to the new list layout?

    In the modern list. The filters are there by default. When clicking each column while previewing site. You will see filter options on all columns by default.

    Thanks, that's a great help.

     

    I was looking for the equivalent of dynamic filtering found in the old list layout.  In this example in the design studio, it would give me dropdown list of Component Categories to filter on:

    In the modern list layout, the equivalent looks like this in preview:

    It isn't perfect, because it is duplicating the options in the dropdown list, but it is a lot better than not being able to filter.
