Web Template vs Page Template : What is the distinction?

I can't find a clear answer on this in any Microsoft documentation or Training, and I'm having a hard time understanding the distinction of use between the two - more specifically, what the purpose of a Page Template is if it can't be modified in any meaningful way.

I assume a Web Template is like a container, module, or component, that can be reused throughout the site - and utilizes Code Snippets to capture value changes to content. Yet it is also the container that wraps any give page too (if it's created to be intended as such). But the Page Template confuses me. What is it a template of and for? And, aside from the option of HTML or Rewrite, what distinguishes one from another? And why would a Web Page have a Page Template that isn't being used as the Page Template for the Web Page? For example: The Access Denied web page uses the Default studio page template instead of the Access Denied page template.

Thank you for any clarity you can provide.

Thank you for the info Fubar, it's a huge help.

And just to close the loop on this - Access Denied using the Default Studio template is merely a 'layout option' over the Access Denied page template that it comes with. They are interchangeable at the Web Page level, but they will produce different visual results, depending on which you select.

Ok. It's starting to make more sense.

The structure is Web Page is linked to Page Template and the Page Template is linked to either a Web Template or an aspx template.

Functionally the Page Template is just a linker to the first Web Template (and you can nest/include other Web Templates from the first one), or the aspx template.

You have no control over an aspx template it is as provided and its content is sitting on the Microsoft  Application Servers (in the old days in an on-premise Portal you did have access to these and could create your own - but not any more).

Web Templates is where you can customize and use Liquid commands/tags to render HTML run FetchXML queries and lots of other stuff  etc https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/maker/portals/liquid/liquid-overview

(the Power Pages designer, creates Web Templates and you can Edit Code as you go, in earlier times you would create it all from scratch).
