External sources in site search?

From what I've seen there is no way to add external sources in site search, right?

For the Copilot chatbot it is possible to define external knowledge sources and it would have been nice to be able to integrate the same kind of search in the general site search, instead of using the chatbot.

In our case it is a support site where I would like to just have one search field (think Google web search) that can search both internal and external sources in one UI, and not forcing the use of the chatbot UI.

You're absolutely right in your understanding: as of now, Power Pages site search does not support indexing or querying external sources (like SharePoint, external websites, or third-party knowledge bases). It is limited to searching Dataverse content that is exposed through lists and views configured in the portal.

✅ What You Can Do with Copilot (and Why It’s Different)

The Copilot chatbot in Power Pages (via Copilot Studio) can be extended with:

    • External knowledge sources (e.g., SharePoint, public websites, PDFs)
    • Custom plugins and APIs
    • Generative AI capabilities

This makes it much more flexible than the built-in site search.

🧠 Your Use Case: Unified Search Experience

You're aiming for a Google-like search bar that:

    • Searches both internal Dataverse content
    • And external sources (e.g., documentation, support articles)

This is not possible with the default site search, but here are two potential workarounds:

🛠️ Option 1: Build a Custom Search Page

You can create a custom search page in Power Pages that:

    • Uses JavaScript to call both:
      • Dataverse Web API (for internal content)
      • Bing Search API, Azure Cognitive Search, or SharePoint Search API (for external content)
    • Merges and displays results in a unified UI

This gives you full control over:

    • Ranking
    • Filtering
    • Display format

🛠️ Option 2: Use Copilot as the Search Interface

If you're open to using the Copilot chatbot as the primary search interface, you can:

    • Train it on both internal and external sources
    • Customize its greeting and behavior to act like a search assistant
    • Embed it prominently on your homepage

This gives you the unified search experience, but in a conversational format.

    🔮 Future Possibility

Microsoft may eventually unify Copilot’s external knowledge capabilities with site search, but as of now, they are separate systems.
