Attachment is missing from Invitation email

I'm using Dynamics Portal and want to add a pdf attachment to the Invitation email.

I edited the default OOTB "Send Invitation" workflow. In the "create an email to act as an email template" step I added the attachment to the email record. When running the workflow the email is sent but the attachment is missing.

I built another workflow which is similar to the "Send Invitation" workflow above but instead it creates and sends the email in one step. This works ok.

So:

1) Why does the original method not work?

2) The original method used the custom workflow "Portals: Send Invitation", whereas the new method doesn't. I can't find what this step does. Checked the portal source code but couldn't find any reference to this. Is it required?

Thanks

Mike

Generally Microsoft Source code for their plugins and custom workflow activities is not available as far as I'm aware.  When they moved to only offering the Portal as an Online version, they did release the source code for the Portal itself so that those who had to stay on premise could maintain the code themselves - but I don't think it included the plugin and custom workflow activity code (but I may be wrong on this).

Thank you - that makes sense - so the "Portals: Send Invitation" workflow step can also handle invitations for Invitation.Type=Group.

For my portal it's one invitation per contact (ie, Invitation.Type=Single). So it seems like using a SendEmail workflow step (with the To field populated with the Contact) as you suggest will work. And this allows the email to contain attachments.

Is the source code for the Portals workflow assemblies available? I can't find it in the official Microsoft portal source code download.

Thanks for your help with this.

Its not a straight Send Email action - as the Invitation also has the capability to send to more than 1 contact at the same time (i.e. can send 5 invitation emails based on the settings on the Invitation record).

If you knew you were only ever going to invite 1 person at a time, you may be able to do a Send Email (populate the To with the contact on the invitation record) or Create draft and then Send (you will find various free Custom Workflow Activity utilities that will have a send draft email action)

    Hi Fubar

Good point. I added a Stop step to the workflow:

Then I ran the workflow and looked at the draft email message record that was created:

This shows that the email has an attachment.

The indicates that the "Portals: Send Invitation" step is removing the attachment.

Do we know what this step does?

Is there any reason not to do a Create and Send in one step (as the 2nd screenshot in original post)?

Have you tried Stopping the workflow just after the Create Email and then view the created Draft email to make sure that it has the Attachment (i.e. don't automatically blame the Portals Send Invitation step).

(Create Email and Send Email steps are not the same and have a number of different behaviors)
