Append query in dataverse

Hi,

I want to do an append query in dataverse like I do in Access.

So, I have a template checklist in one table in dataverse with 2 questions.

I want to click a button and have that appended to an active checklist table where the user can answer those two questions.

How can I do this?

Thanks,

Chris

    Hi @Chris20 ,

hopefully i got the question right.

As far as i know, there is no out-of box functionality to edit more than tableentry at once in portals.

This means, you have to create something on your own by code. This is especially true because the answers to the questions might sometimes be strings, sometimes dates, sometimes numbers or listboxes. So it can be really challenging for a universal model.

If i were to solve it, i would read the specific template table and render the possible answers via vue, react, angular, elm, fable or whatever you prefer 🙂 . Then you could store the answers via the webapi of portals.

    (obviously, i am a code fan 🙂 )

Hopefully, this points in a solution driection for you. May be one of the other people around have a more low code idea for that.

If you need more informations on this approach just feel free to come back to this.

    Have fun,

      Christian

    Hi Christian,

I don't know these programming languages. In Access it takes about 30 seconds to set up an append query. In SQL Server I can quickly use a Insert Into query to append. That is amazing that this function has to be done in code in order to accomplish. I will mark accept as solution. Though, I can't see how something as simple as an append can't be done in low code.

I find the low-code solution to only include just displaying data in the power apps. Maybe I am missing something, but basic functionality seems to be seriously missing. I wonder if this is why adoption is currently so low for these tools?

    Thanks again,

    Chris

    Hi @Chris20 ,

thanks for accepting my answer as a solution.

I totally get your point: why the hell does it have to be that complicated?

I am not in access but have quite a long experience history in sql. And you are right. Inserting rows can be done within seconds by queries. Unfortunately, this can only done by you within seconds.

When you wan't to have UIs which don't make anybody think, you have to prepare something especially for your targetgroup.

Additionally, the internet and browsers were not created in the beginning for complex software scenarios. So, there are advanced technical issues and the demand for individual UserExperiences have raised.

In my opinion, this is what it makes complicated.

But as i said: i get your point. When i try to address this kind of things i try to make more generic software which might fit to more than one customer. This brought me the nickname "Mr. Generic" which was not always something meant to be good 🙂

Tools like access and even sql as a language were designed to do a lot with table oriented data.

The internet is more dealing with single row data with low or no explanations.

So, when access fits the needs of your users, you should not change to web environments.

Just my personal view as a dinosaur in this industry 🙂 .

Have fun and don't give up bringing value to your customers,

      Christian
