Organisational locked down on Power Platform and Fabric capabilities

Hiya!
First time on a community platform, so please be gentle… Autistic ADHDer combo here! That means I’m generally lovely—unless I’m overwhelmed, overstimulated, or hyper-fixating on my latest obsession, in which case, expect malfunctioning robot energy, awkwardness, and direct communication. I promise, the awkwardness is endearing, and the intentions are usually good! 😅
I’m looking for some practical advice, as I’m currently butting my head against a brick wall (don’t worry, I’m wearing a helmet). I’m a Data Analyst, but my organisation has locked down most Power Platform and Fabric capabilities for non‑IT staff. Right now, I can’t create my own Power BI workspace, use Fabric items, or explore Power Apps and Power Automate beyond the basics. All this while trying to keep up with the ever-mutating Copilot/Agents madness—it’s a wild ride!
I’ve just joined the Power Up Program and am eager to develop my skills—particularly in Power Apps, automation patterns, data modelling, and Fabric concepts. However, I learn best through hands-on experience, and with so many features blocked in our tenant, I keep running into obstacles.
What I’m looking for advice on:
  • How do others upskill when their organisation has a highly restricted Power Platform environment?
  • Are there safe, recommended ways to practise outside your main tenant?
  • Any strategies for working with IT/admin teams to request access or demonstrate the business value? I did request some things as reasonable adjustments, and that got completely stomped on 😥
  • Tips for learning Fabric concepts when you can’t use Fabric directly?
I’m eager to expand my skills, knowing there’s so much more I could contribute to my organisation. Unfortunately, it often feels like these opportunities are being gatekept from those of us outside IT. 🙈
Of course, I want to remain fully compliant with organisational policies and governance, but the guidelines are quite vague. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

    Hi JDM,

I can resonate with this on a few levels, I am also a bit neurospicy and experienced challenges with our IT teams while implementing Power Platform solutions. Generally speaking I have found that friction from IT when it comes to the Power Platforms usually stems from the fact they don't know enough about it and see risk in the fact that employees outside of IT can become more proficient in it than they are due to the low code nature of the platforms.

How I broke down this wall:
My first step in this and I would suggest you do the same was to find an ally within IT management (the more senior the better), from there it is a selling game so make sure you understand how and why allowing you to use the Power Platforms will bring value to the business. In my case I found a significant business efficiency problem, learnt how to solve the problem with the Power Platforms, sold my solution to management, implemented the solution - from there on I had free reign within the Power Platforms.

How should you learn Power Platforms:
I had a slight advantage here in that I pay for a personal Microsoft account meaning I was able to learn the platforms while using them in a practical sense, however I also found LinkedIn learning was a great tool for learning the principles so this may be of value to you if you have access. Otherwise I would highly recommend both: Reza Dorrani - YouTube and Shane Young - YouTube for learning the Power Platforms, Reza covers most things while Shane is more Power Apps orientated.

    Other sources of leverage:
If you still struggle to convince your IT department of the value the Power Platforms can bring you can utilise things like this community, I personally would be happy to provide some testimonial to offer to those you are speaking to in your organisation about the value the Power Platforms has brought to us, and Im sure there are plenty of others in this community who would do the same.

Some of the Microsoft Learning Path activities offer labs where you are given access to a virtual environment and within that you can spool up some Fabric artifacts etc. Give that a try.
