What's the license suggestion to maintain Dev, Uat, and Prod Power Page sites

Hi all,

I am building a Power Page site with external users. I aware there are 30 days limit for Power Page trial. At the end of trial period, the site will be frozen and then deleted.

My question is what should I do to maintain the Dev, Uat and Prod environment which allow the developers (3), testers (3), end users (100)? Do I need to purchase licenses for 106 users?  If no one is login the Dev and Uat site, then we don't need the licenses for them?

If I cannot finish the development within 30 days, what should I do? Do I need to export the solution to unmanaged package, then import it to a new trial site?

Thank you.

    Hi @SP2019admin,

This is sure that we don't need to buy licenses for all 106 users across Dev, UAT, and Prod. Licenses are only required for authenticated users accessing the production site. Dev and UAT environments can exist without external user licenses if no one logs in there. To continue development beyond the 30‑day trial, you should convert your trial to a paid subscription or export/import your solution into a licensed environment. Here is MS documentation for the same.

    • Trial Limitations - Trial sites last 30 days. Once it expires, the site is frozen and then deleted. To avoid losing work, you must either convert the trial to production or export your solution.
    • Licensing Model - Power Pages licensing is based on authenticated user logins and anonymous page views. Hence, we do not need licenses for developers/testers working inside Dev/UAT if they are not logging in as external users. For production, you need licenses for the expected external users (in your case, ~100 end users).
    • Environment Strategy - Dev/UAT: Can be maintained without external user licenses if only internal staff (developers/testers) are working. Good idea for maintaining DEV/UAT/Prod
Tips: Best practice: Use Solutions to move configurations between Dev → UAT → Prod environments.

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi, you can safely convert all your Portals to Production using the Admin Centre

For the PROD portal, you should purchase the authenticated license packs, and assign that to the PROD environment / site.

For sandbox environments (DEV/UAT), normally you you don't need to purchase licenses, just keep in mind that the Azure Resources behind the scene won't be scaled up, which is usually not an issue.

    Hi Oliver,

If the trial site is created in a nonexpiring environment (for example, production or sandbox), your trial site expires after 90 days. Then it will be deleted.

In this case I think I need to assign a few license to UAT (sandbox) and convert it to a public site in order to keep it permanent. Otherwise I will lose the Uat site after 90 days.

As an alternative, I can build a new Uat site after 90 days.

You won't lose the site itself, basically the site will go inactive, but all your site configuration/customization will still be there

You can safely convert the site itself to PROD, you should do it for all your sites

The one you really need the licenses is the one associated with a Production Dataverse
