New ! Allocate Capacity for Your Storage

Finally after a Long wait !! This feature allows admins to enforce capacity usage limits at individual environment level for Database, File and Log.

We can now allocate available storage capacity (Database, File, and Log) across different environments. For example, if we have a default environment and others, you can distribute the storage based on specific project needs.

While we wait for Microsoft to Publish documentation about the feature, here’s what I see available today:

Types of Capacity: As we already know the existing model,

  • Database: This is for storing structured data, which includes tables and records.
  • File: This storage is for attachments, documents, and other non-structured data types.
  • Log: Stores activity logs for auditing and other purposes, mainly related to the platform’s tracking and monitoring.

Overages occur when the storage capacity is exceeded. Microsoft allows us to monitor and send alerts when we are approaching the limits. This helps with resource planning and avoiding interruptions in services.

  • Navigate to the Power Platform Admin Center – https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/environments.
  • Now click on the Dataverse Tab. We can see out Environments Listed. Since im using a trial Environment, we can see the Storages in the below Screenshot.
  • In General , we can click on the Details to view the capacity that is occupied by the each of the storage, which is an existing Functionality.
  • Now when you click on the Environment, we can see a new button appearing “Allocate Capacity”.
  • We can Assign the Storage in MB in each of the Database, File and Log and Save it.

In short, we can see two things,

Allocation: For every environment with Dataverse we have the ability to set an allocated amount of database, file and log capacity in MB. You can set the limit to be less than current consumption, but you can’t set it higher than what’s available on tenant level.

Monitoring: The main Resources -> Capacity page in Power Platform Admin Center now shows two types of graphs: usage vs. allocation. It gives a quick tenant level overview of where we are in terms of your planned Dataverse storage consumption and the reality.

Lets wait and Watch what Microsoft is going to Provide !!
