Applies to Product - Dynamics 365 Human Resources

What’s happening?
The customer is unable to delete a position due to an error message stating, "Positions cannot be deleted while dependent Position hierarchies exist. Delete dependent Position hierarchies and try again."

Reason:
The underlying cause of this is that dependent position hierarchies still exist, preventing the deletion of the position.

Resolution:
Ensure that all dependent position hierarchies are removed. For that:

  • Go to Human Resources> Positions> All positions or Active positions and select position that you want to delete to open it.
  • Open Reports to tab and click on Terminate in every register to define date in Expiration date field
  • Open Relationship tab, remove registers found there.
  • Click on View in hierarchy button on the top to identify if there are child positions under the current position.
  • If there are child positions, select everyone and click on Position details button to open selected position details.
  • Open Reports to tab and click on Terminate in every register where position to delete is set to define date in Expiration date field.
  • Open Relationship tab, remove registers where position to delete is set.
Try to remove the position now and check that the error message about dependent positions is not given.
