Hello everyone,
You might see there are some subscription types in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:
https://admin.microsoft.com/AdminPortal/Home#/subscriptions
Here are two of them that you might be confusing:
"Free individual user subscription": This is Free subscription activated by users in your company or called self sign up license.
This license gives lots of seat counts which might be up to 10,000 to be used.
- There is no expiration date for the subscription itself. However, when it is assigned to a user, it gives the user service plans used in Apps tile under Licenses and Apps when you select the user, and the service plan has expiration date.
- After this expiration date, this user cannot be reassigned the Free individual user subscription to use the service plan. Admin needs to assign this subscription to other users. Or, another user can sign up for Free then the available seats of this License will be reduced.
- Each service plan will have different expiration dates and this assigned user can use the services before the expiration date of the service plan.
Example:
When you go to https://powerapps.com and Try Free/Start my Trial, then you will be assigned Microsoft Power Apps Plan 2 Trial (sku = powerapps_viral)
+ Microsoft Automate, this Power Apps Plan 2 Trial subscription gives you Flow P2 Viral which lasts for 90 days. (Flow Free is tracking service only)
+ Microsoft PowerApps, this subscription gives you PowerApps Trial which lasts for 30 days.

Power Apps:

"Free Commercial direct": This is FREE subscription with limited seats (usually is 25) and has expiration date. Once expired, all assigned users cannot use this subscription. The subscriptions are usually activated from Microsoft Admin Center portal or product website by Global administrator.

Hope that helps you understand better about the Free subscriptions.
