PowerApps Portal AD B2C - Send portal invitation for imported D365 contacts

Hi Folks

We have a Powerapps portal with B2C authentication setup.

We will be doing data migration of some contacts that will be imported into d365 manually and assigned web roles manually. I have below questions in how the invitation can be sent to those new contacts to register/login to the portal successfully.

Questions:

1. Do I have to create the user in azure B2C before I import into d365 to create the link between B2C user and d365 contacts? If so how do the link gets created and is it the external identity in D365 contact that explains this link?

2. After step 1, where should the invitation process sit? Will it be from azure AD side or on d365 side?

Note: I have explored the "Send Invitation" workflow in D365 and seen it sending the link to the new contacts however after registering/signing up, I logged out and when I login it says "user does not exist" I guess this is because there is related no user in Azure AB2C.

Could you advise the best practice approach considering my requirement please?

Thanks

It may depend on your exact scenario.

One option is to turn on the automatic email mapping see "Contact mapping with email" on this page https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/maker/portals/configure/configure-azure-ad-b2c-provider-manual

I think you can still use the Invitation with B2C, feels like you may have something not setup correctly (or maybe something else causing the issue

    • not saying this is what it is but an inactive Contact record gives that same error message.
    • Double check the Invitation record and verify if the Contact it was sent to is the same as the Redeemed Contact lookup (if you already have an active B2C session open when you do the Invitation, it can lead to the Invitation being associated to the already logged in B2C contact )
    • Could also do an Advanced find look for External Identity records created around the time you did the B2C (this is the record that links the External Identity provider to the Contact record) and see one was created and if so if it is associated to a different Contact record
