Format to save email as and then retrieve for new email attachment

Hello, I am looking to save an email in a SharePoint list (provided it meets criteria in previous steps), and then attach that email to a new email. However, I've tried saving and retrieving as .eml and .msg and the attachment comes through as generic file (and Windows asks what program you'd like to open in) rather than an email that opens automatically with Outlook. Can anybody help?

The .eml or .msg file extension should be added to the file name field, not the file content field as it is in your screenshot.

    Thanks Pstork1.

So the attachment comes through as generic attachment (screenshot 1), but is there anyway to make it come through as a standard email, Outlook attachment like in screenshot 2, where I won't be asked what program to open it with, it just knows Outlook is the one?

Did you change where you are adding the extension?  If the file has an .eml or .msg extension that will tell your system what app to use to open it.  In your screenshot you aren't adding an extension to the file name.  That's why its a generic file.

Sorry, maybe I am misunderstanding. I have .msg in the file name field under the Create File action. And then again in the attachments content field under Send an Email. I've since removed .msg from the file content field as you suggested.

Should the .msg be in another field yet? It looks like they are saving as .msg in SharePoint.

Here's the test I ran and it works fine.  The one issue may be if your OS doesn't have a default program, like Outlook, set for .eml files.

Thanks Paul. I believe I have the right set up now, just need to figure out the default email part. I appreciate your help, and providing what should be the solution.

Not sure what you mean by "default email part"? Could you explain a bit more and I'll try to help.

Accidentally replied to general post, not just Pstork1. Removing that comment.

The bit about how my Outlook does not want to open that email as a piece of mail, and rather asks me what program I'd like to open it with. Regardless of my using .eml or .msg Outlook asks how I'd like to open it rather than simply opening as a standard email.

That's because your OS isn't setup with a default application to use when it encounters those extensions. Follow the steps in this article to set the default application for .eml and .msg on your computer. It will then work without prompting you. Change default programs in Windows - Microsoft Support
