Power App required 'Edit' rights from Excel to display the information on the power app but I do not want to give 'Edit' write to the users. How to overcome this issue.

As mentioned in the subject, my power app is linked to excel online to display the data on the power app. The only way for the users to use the power app and see the data is when they have 'edit' rights to the excel file. However, I do not wish to give the users 'edit' rights as this excel contains a sensitive data that should not be changed by anyone.

The excel online file is currently in a sharepoint folder.

How can I overcome this issue?

Hi @powerful-user19 ,

One of the (many) shortcomings of using Excel as a data source is this - Power Apps needs to write things in the background to the file, so needs edit permissions. Have you thought of putting the data on a SharePoint List ?

The data needs to be cleaned and calculated in the excel file, hence we are using it. Does power app still need to write things in the background even though the power app only displays information and does not allow the users to enter any data?

Yes - it is the nature of the connection - there is nothing you can do about this. As I mentioned, Excel is a terrible data source and really should be only used if you have no alternatives.

As I mentioned, SharePoint will do the job and you can give view permissions to the users.

Thanks for your help. But if the excel file is constantly being updated, will the sharepoint list reflect the new changes or do I have to create a new list whenever the excel file is updated?

You would have to do something in Power Automate to synchronise them - both for new records and changes.
