Using Child Flows in Approvals

I am building out an approval that will have a parent flow and 2 child flows.  A form is completed which triggers the parent flow when an item is created in SharePoint list, creates an approval, updates the item in SharePoint list with the Approval ID, and then calls the child flow.  The child flow is triggered with the when an item is created or modified trigger - which I'm thinking is the update the item in the parent flow, waits for the approval from the parent flow, has a condition which dictates which email is sent to the original item creator and then responds back to the parent flow.

The parent flow runs correctly, but the child flow is stuck on when an item is created or modified.  I'm not finding any examples online of the type of child flow that I want to run and I know that I'm missing that key piece to connect the parent and child flows, but can't figure out the best way to do that.

I have included screenshots of my flows.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!
