Get data from custom user properties from a user profile

Hello,

I'm trying to get the data from an user profile of an external guest user in SharePoint. The automation should do:

  • when a new items is created in a SharePoint list
  • get user profile of the item creator
  • read the string value from the custom user property and copy the string value
  • paste the same string value into the field in the SharePoint item

Is this generally possible to get/retrieve the value of a custom user property? Because I couldn't find a solution or a possibility within PowerAutomate. If I use the function to get get the user profile or get my profile, I can not get the custom user property, only the standard user profile fields are available.

Many thanks!

Regards,

David

    Hi @d4v1d4bx

    Office 365 Users Connection (Get user profile) provider lets you access user profiles in your organization using your Office 365 account. Since external users access as guest they are not in your organisation not sure this is possible.

    Thanks

    Hi @abm ,

    thank you for your reply.

    Yes, this is what I am doing with the function (Get user profile) office 365 and it's generally working for external guest users. But I can not get the custom user properties from a office 365 user profile. Only the default fields are showing.

    The url below, show how I created the custom user properties in SharePoint.

    Hi @d4v1d4bx

    Thanks for your email and sending that link.

    I have added some custom property using the url https:////docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/add-and-edit-user-profile-properties

    Looks like its only synced from SharePoint to UPA.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/user-profile-sync

    I am not sure whether this property will be automatically created and synced in AD. So I did the following REST API to get the custom property I added.

    _api/SP.UserProfiles.PeopleManager/GetMyProperties

    image.png

    This returns a JSON object which contained my custom property. Here Location is my custom property.

    {
    "__metadata": {
    "type": "SP.KeyValue"
    },
    "Key": "Location",
    "Value": "Bolton",
    "ValueType": "Edm.String"
    }

    Next step you could add a Parse JSON to extract the values of your custom property.

    Hope it helps.

    Thanks

    @abm, thank you.

    So I created the custom user properties field called "Supplier". How do I get the info from the custom user properties field of the list item creator automatically into the same list item with the function "Update item"?

    What I basically want to do is,

    1. create an external user, add the "Supplier" name manually in the user profile
    2. when the external user, creates an item in the list
    3. the automation should read the custom user property "Supplier", when a new item is created
    4. copy the "Supplier" string value from the custom user property field
    5. paste the same string value into the field "Supplier" in the list item with "Update item" function in Power Automate

    I'm not into coding.

    //edit

    With Parse JSON action, I was able to get all the info from the user profile while testing the flow. Now I'm still trying to find a way to extract the value of the "Supplier" field and copy the value and update the sharepoint element/item with it.

    @abm,

    I'm still struggling to understand the use and function of Parse JSON. I was able to get all the data from the user profile of the user, but it generates the data of it as output. How do I only retrieve the value of one specific field "Supplier" from the Parse JSON and use it to update the sharepoint element?

    I tried t:

    1. send http request to sharepoint
    2. parse json
    3. compose
    4. update item (sharepoint)

    The Compose function generates a link to download, which leads to nothing and a blank page.

    If I update the item with the dynamic value of the Compose, it keeps the value on the Sharepoint item empty.
