Users with pronouns

Good Morning.

 

We have an existing app that recognises the User and then gives them edit permissions for their own items only.  However I have found that, if a user adds pronouns to their Microsoft account then the system seems to no longer be able to "see" them and they can no longer edit the items that belong to them.  Any idea why?

    Are you using the User ID or the Display Name as the filter criteria? 
    Trying using the Office 365 User ID that will never change in your tenant
