Barcode Reader on Windows Surface Pro and Surface Laptop Studio

Hi everybody

I am trying to build a power app to scan QR-Codes that are attached as stickers to various objects. The app should help to take inventory.

As per Microsoft Documentation the barcode reader is available on IOS, Android and Windows. Somewhere I read that one has to use the Power App application to enable the barcode reader on windows.

Until today I did not find a way to use the barcode reader on my Surface Laptop Studio. I seems that there is no support but I cannot find any detailed information on which devices are supported.

Our users are equipped either with a Microsoft Surface Pro or with a Laptop Studio for the IT crowd. So our hard- and software stack relies on Microsoft. I cannot believe that  it is not possible to build a scanning power app working with a microsoft device  in 2024 while it is easily working on iOS and Android.

Does anyone have any information or a workaround to scan QR Codes in a power app?

Regards

Roland

    Hi @RolandM ,

Are you running in the Windows App (download from the MS Store) or in a browser ? The first one should work - also have you enabled the web barcode scanner ?

    Hi @WarrenBelz

Thank you for your reply, appreciate it very much.

To answer your questions. Yes, I've tried running the application using the Windows App from MS Store. Unfortunately it did not work with my Laptop Studio. Do you think this would work with a Surface?

Concerning the web barcode scanner: I cannot find the option marked in your screenshot to enable the web barcode scanner in my app.

    Regards,

    Hi @RolandM ,

I have never used this before, however a test I did running the app (MS Store) on my laptop opened the scanner window. I could not get my built-in webcam to scan anything, but I think this was a focus issue.

    Hi @WarrenBelz

Thank you very much for your testing. I found out, that the bar code reader component works when I use it in a canvas app.
In my use case I am using it in a model driven app on a custom page. This is not working.

But your test helped me to think about an alternative approach, I appreciate that.

Have a nice day and kind regards,

    Roland
