Hello,
I'm in the middle of building a Parcel Tracking app for my place of work which allows us to track when a delivery has been received, assign who the parcel is for and track when it was handed over/signed by the recipient. I'm currently using a Sharepoint List where a new record is create for each parcel.
The way it works currently is the parcel barcode (courier tracking barcode) is scanned on every parcel which creates a record, so for example if there 1 parcel delivered, that parcel gets scanned and 1 record is create. If there's 2 parcels then both barcodes are scanned, therefore creating 2 records.
A question was brought up (and a valid one) asking what do we do in regards to if a delivery has been made but there's 3 parcels all for the same person. They've asked if there's a way to link multiple parcels together, so if ANY 1 of the 3 parcels is scanned then it will inform the mail room that there should be another 2 parcels.
In my head the way i see this working is by creating another Sharepoint List and calling this something like "Linked_Parcels". It will then have columns like:
Barcode
LinkedNumber
And then within my main Sharepoint List, i create another column called "Linked" which will contain the value of "LinkedNumber". Therefore if i scan any one of the 3 parcels and i see it has a value within the "Linked" column then i can do a Lookup to pull in the other parcels linked to that barcode. For example:
Main Sharepoint List:
| Barcode | Who For | Linked |
| 12345 | Mike | 23 |
| 23456 | Mike | 23 |
| 34567 | Mike | 23 |
Linked_Parcels List:
| Barcode | Linked |
| 12345 | 23 |
| 23456 | 23 |
| 34567 | 23 |
| 45678 | 24 |
| 56789 | 24 |
I don't want the Linked Parcels to be based of the "Who For", just those where a delivery has been made to the office for someone and theres 3 parcels for that same person for the same order. i.e. Parcel 1 of 3. So if there's was a delivery made, the first one for "Mike" and that one contains 3 parcels and the second one also for "Mike" which is just 1 parcel then in theory I'd want the first 3 parcels linked together, and the other standalone.
I hope that makes sense, how best would you achieve this?
