advanced form condition field = field?

I have an advanced form that the end user gets pre-populated with some unique data. I need to display a step if the user changes any of that data. The data is stored in two fields simultaneously so when staff review the data they can see the original value and the changed value side by side in a form. In theory this should be super easy I have tried a condition like this.

rd_usernumber = rd_presetnumber

but I always just get an error page. what options do I have? does a condition always need to reference a static value there's nothing in the docs either way?

the only other thing I can think of to try is adding a calculated field that compares the values and sets it's value to a specific number if they match.

    The second option using a calculated field worked, would still love to know if there was an easier way
