Update item Creating a Loop In flows

Hi

@v-yetonggu-msft

When an item is created or modified in my SharePoint list, I am running a flow to stop giving permissions and assign permissions based on the users. Currently, the flow is running in an infinite loop.

I have made the above changes in the SP list using the 'Stop Run' option. Could you please look at the flow below and check if I should add any further actions?

My flow is also getting failed, if the user column is blank

Could you please help me to fix this

    Can you please provide a clear screenshot and elaborate on this?

    Hi @Danny_Dicaprio  ,

    Your screenshot is not clear , but from the message you have posted , it looks the the flow is going in an infinite loop because of when an item is created or modified trigger , so you need to have a flag which identifies if the flow should run or not(Or say a condition for flow to tell when it should stop).

    So you can create a column in you SP list named IsUpdated and set it to Yes and add this in the trigger condition. (Now when you want to trigger the flow to make an update update this column to No). and this can help you avoid the infinite loop.

    For the second error , you can use a conditional expression to check if the column is empty or not,

    if(empty(peoplepickercolumn/EMail),peoplepickercolumnemail ,null).

    If this helps , do give this a thumbs up and mark this as a solution.

    Thanks,

    Sanmesh

    @SanmeshG

    Thanks for the reply

    Could there be any other work around for this which will work when an item is modified also

    Seems user information is mandatory as you are assigning permissions to them based on your logic. But in case, if user information is and to handle that case use a condition action. If user information is not null, perform the action of assigning permissions, If no, then leave the false branch empty.

    HI @Danny_Dicaprio ,

    To prevent your flow from running in an infinite loop and handle cases where the user column is blank, using

    Trigger: When an item is created or modified.
    Condition: Check if the user column is not blank.
    If Yes:
    Remove existing permissions.
    Assign new permissions.
    If No:
    Terminate the flow.

    Refer to the blog post for stopping infinite loops: https://o365scott.blog/2019/12/18/stopping-infinite-loops-when-updating-sharepoint-list-items

    Mark as solution if it helps.

    Thanks,

    will allowing management of content types will affect my PowerApps form anyways  ?

    I don't think it should unless you are changing the type of existing columns
