How the heck do I learn this tool :) ??

Hey Forum!

I have just been introduced to Power Automate. My background with tools like these is pretty much nil.

I am just wondering how does one become adept at using it as anything that seems remotely interesting in doing seems to take me to the coding aspects of various flows. And without having previous background I am wondering what may be a good entry point.

I tried creating a flow where if there are multiple rows of an employee a single email is sent to them with a HTML table being the bulk of the message. This led me to a forum post which seemed to make sense, followed it and it simply led me to Flow Checker errors in expressions. And being a complete novice, this simply meant that the solution will not work for me.

Anyone found a similar experience and did you overcome it, and if you did than what path was best for you?

Curious about everyone's view and experience!

Cheers,

Griz

    Hi @Grizhlie

As a beginner on flow, I first tried out direct actions and direct dynamic data without getting much into expressions. Once you get comfortable with the flows and how actions are coupled with each other, you then step into the advanced items including expressions and move towards more complex scenarios.

You can always check out video tutorials on simple stuff and basic use of expressions and build on the top of it. And then post here if you get stuck at some point.

    Hope this Helps!

    Hi @Grizhlie

The best way to learn is to build.

Other ways to gain skills fast is to:
    - be active in forums. This could be posting questions, reading others posts, and checking out the blogs.
    - Check Eventbrite and Usergroups. There are Power Platform Bootcamps and other events that are held all over.
    - Build real examples that help you or your business. Ask some workmates, see if they need any automation in their life.
    - YouTube is pretty good
    - Check out Udemy ( Kent Weare, Jon Levesque ) They have great courses on Udemy
    - Trial and error. Deciphering the errors Flow responds with is key.
    - Get familiar with JSON. Flow is just a JSON file in the background. Use the feature Peek code on actions by clicking the 3 dots.

Thanks @yashag2255! I'll definitely follow this advice. I have a habit of jumping into the deep end and getting overwhelmed.

Thank you @Jcook , it didn't occur to me to look at the entire Power Platform. I just learned how interlinked these tools are.  I'll definitely spend more time on the forums, hopefully I'll come across questions from novices such as myself 🙂

    Hi,

We are looking to help answer this at Collab365 with something we call - CONNOR's MICROSOFT 365
    30-DAY CHALLENGE!

Connor is a new member of our team and as Collab365 and although technically savvy in other areas has never had any Microsoft exposure, so we set him the challenge to build an App that will use Teams, PowerPlatform and SharePoint. Anyway take a look at the challenge site here - https://connor.collab365.community/

We specialise in Free Microsoft Tech Virtual conferences, and as part of our GlobalCon3 event we are having 2 Power Platform days in August, might also be worth a look - https://content.collab365.community/collab365-globalcon3-2020/microsoft365-virtual-conference/

    Hope you find those useful!

    Regards

    Fraser
