Detail from an online discussion about Power BI about the two data functions I am looking at (I am pretty sure this aligns with and applies to Power Apps as well because that is what I am seeing in my analysis):

"When you import data from Power BI Desktop, you can import data from multiple sources. You can also use the Power Query Editor to shape the data you import before bringing it into your data model."

"When using Get Data in the Power BI Service, here you can bring in a single source, as is and currently you cannot make any modifications to the data and you need to use it as is."

The key here is that import (using Power Query) brings it into the data model. It creates a table in Dataverse that I can manipulate and configure even after the import is done. This seems to be a pretty important feature that I am by policy not able to perform. I need this import capability to effectively create a database and import data into the db.
