Better method to search thousands of rows

I have a large dataset.  It is thousands of rows.  Certainly above 2,000.  It will probably approach 10,000 or more in just a few years.  Thus, i'm dependent on delegation for accurate results.  I have been using a sharepoint online list.  Its reasonable, but I would like to investigate the use of SQL Server (On premesis) to manage this data.  It seems delegation is more in my favor with SQL over sharepoint.  The question is, if going through the on-prem gateway to get to it would be as quick.  I am developing user interfaces to search this data is complex ways.  Thus, getting a return on the query in a very quick manner is important.  So, there is an expectation of waiting that can be annoying if those results dont come back in just a very few seconds.  My sharepoint list is marginal at this, but not completely unusable.  I am hoping to gain some flexibility and performance going with the SQL avenue.  Is this a good approach?

Thank you!

i'm curious.  It has been a while since Ive developed apps.  I usually got answers within minutes.  Is the activity lower now due to AI?

Using SQL Server to manage a large dataset (such as your growing dataset of thousands of rows) is generally a good approach compared to a SharePoint list, especially for scenarios where performance and query complexity are critical. Testing your setup and optimizing your configuration (e.g., indexing, delegation, and stored procedures) will help ensure that you achieve the desired performance improvements over your current SharePoint list setup.
