Many to Many relationship without CDS

Hello All

Suppose I have this datamodel with a many to many relationship between Order and Product.

ClearCollect(
 Order,
 { id: 1, customer: "Tracy" },
 { id: 2, customer: "Peter" },
 { id: 3, customer: "Boris" },
 { id: 4, customer: "Marie" },
 { id: 5, customer: "John" }
);
ClearCollect(
 Product,
 { id: 1, name: "Soap" },
 { id: 2, name: "Beer" },
 { id: 3, name: "Olives" },
 { id: 4, name: "Oil" },
 { id: 5, name: "Oat" }
);
ClearCollect(
 OrderDetail,
 { order: 1, product: 5, qty: 12 },
 { order: 1, product: 4, qty: 10 },
 { order: 1, product: 3, qty: 22 },
 { order: 2, product: 3, qty: 34 },
 { order: 3, product: 4, qty: 88 },
 { order: 3, product: 5, qty: 11 },
 { order: 3, product: 1, qty: 23 },
 { order: 4, product: 2, qty: 12 },
 { order: 4, product: 1, qty: 65 },
 { order: 5, product: 1, qty: 41 },
 { order: 5, product: 1, qty: 34 }
);

And now I want to fill a gallery with the equivalent of this query:

select o.*
from Order o
join OrderDetail d on (o.id = d.order)
join Product p on (p.id = d.product)
where p.name like ':bind%'
order by p.name

So I want a collection of orders which contain specific products sorted by the names of the products. The same order may (must) appear multiple times in the result. The only way to reach that result is this code which works but which I find verbose and not very beautyful.

ClearCollect(
 tmpProduct,
 ShowColumns(
 SortByColumns(
 Filter(
 Product,
 StartsWith(name, txtProduct.Text)
 ),
 "name"
 ),
 "id"
 )
);
ClearCollect(
 tmpOrderDetail,
 AddColumns(
 tmpProduct,
 "_product",
 Filter(
 OrderDetail,
 product = id
 )
 )
);
Clear(tmpOrder);
ForAll(
 tmpOrderDetail,
 Collect(
 tmpOrder,
 tmpOrderDetail[@_product]
 )
);
Clear(Result);
ForAll(
 tmpOrder,
 Collect(
 Result,
 Filter(Order, id = tmpOrder[@order])
 )
)

Does anyone have the solution to the general question in a N x M relationship:

How to get a list of N based on filtering and sorting on attributes of M?

Thanks for reading this

    Hi @Taeke

    Just to see if I got this correctly, you have an Orders list that contains an ID and a Customer, a Products list and a Junction table OrdersDetail that contains an OrderID, a Product ID and a quantity.  You would like to have a gallery for the OrdersDetail that is filtered on the Order and sorts the products by name. If that is the case, I would set up two Galleries, one with its Items property Orders that is sorted by Customer name, "galOrders",  and the second, "galOrdersDetail" with its items property

    Sort(
     AddColumns(
     Filter(
     OrderDetails, OrderID = galOrders.Selected.ID
     ),
     "ProductName",
     Lookup(
     Products,ID = ProductID, name
     )
     ),
     ProductName, Ascending
     )

    Thanks @Drrickryp ,

    'The question is slightly different I want to  both filter and sort on product name. You suggestion is a step in the right direction.

    Two things left. First, I dont want to see the orderdetails for orders that do not contain the product I was looking for. I can accomplish that by adding an extra Filter to your suggestion:

    Filter(
     Sort(
     AddColumns(
     Filter(
     OrderDetail, order = galOrder.Selected.id
     ),
     "ProductName",
     LookUp(
     Product,id = product && StartsWith(name,txtProduct.Text) , name
     )
     ),
     "ProductName",
     Ascending
     ),
     !IsBlank(ProductName)
    )

    Second, I don't want to see the orders that do not contain the product I was looking for. I dont know how to achive that. I can't refer to the OrderDetails gallery cause that would cause a circular reference between the two galleries.

    If you just want to display your data you could try a Gallery inside a Gallery? I mocked up this basic gallery to demo what I mean.

    Many-to-Many_GalleryInsideGallery.jpg

    I wasn't able to create a collection of the data (PowerApps didn't recognise any data in the Child gallery to access, for some reason) but as a visual I guess it works?

    I can provide details about how I did this if you like, just let me know.

    Hello @Anonymous

    Alltough I wonder whether this is an exact solution to the problem I certainly would like to study the details of the results of your efforts.

    @Taeke

    I had a bit more of a play and managed to get the above data into 2 collections. Using your collections code I first created the collections then added a button with this as the OnSelect:

    // firstly, Group the data by orderID
    ClearCollect(colGroupedOrders,
     GroupBy(AddColumns(OrderDetail,
     "CustomerName", LookUp(Order,id=order,customer),
     "ProdName", LookUp(Product,id=product,name)),
     "order", "GroupedOrders"));

    // then Ungroup the above collection
    ClearCollect(colUnGroupedOrders, Ungroup(colGroupedOrders, "GroupedOrders"))

    This gives to 2 collections.

    Add a Gallery (ParentGallery) and set the Items to 'colGroupedOrders'. Leave one label in this gallery set to ThisItem.order. Add another label and set it's Text property to

    LookUp(colUnGroupedOrders,order=ThisItem.order,CustomerName)

    Insert a new Gallery (ChildGallery) into the above gallery, Note: this gallery must be inside the ParentGallery. Set it's Items property to

    Sort( Filter( colUnGroupedOrders, order=ThisItem.order), ProdName, Ascending)

    We get the same outcome as above and also access to the data via the 2 collections ie colGroupedOrders and colUnGroupedOrders.

    Hopefully this gets you sorted 🙂

    Note: The GroupBy / UnGroup functions are not delegatable to SharePoint (if that's your data source?) so you may need to use some creative ways to do the above with large data sets.
