Do or don't: Try to make a configurator with PA, or stick with Excel?

Hello,

I've been tasked with a creating a configurator for products/solutions that my company sells.

The main issue why I was approached is that I have some Visual Basic programming skill, and could probably make a decent program using Excel.

I started looking into using MS Access instead of Excel, and found that Microsoft themselves discouraged using it, and referenced Power Apps along with this statement.

I've never heard about Power Apps before reading this, though I found it interesting based on the set of criterias I imagine my configurator should be able to provide our sales team. For this instance, I will use the example of letting our sales team sell computers:

1st screen (with images)

  • Stationary
  • Laptop

2nd screen (based on their first choice)

  • Size of screen (dynamically updated image on the side showing the dimensions of the size)
  • Ram
  • List of compatible Graphics card
  • etc.

3rd Screen (Summary)

  • Output a sales report in Excel or PDF with a custom format and store their entries in Dataverse.

Now I am just on the edge, getting ready to make the jump and try to make this configurator, but I need some kind of reassurance that it will look better, work better and potentially will let other colleagues be encouraged to use it, instead of creating some old looking excel-sheet.

From what I can tell, I will be needing to incorporate:

  • Model driven app using Dataverse as source
  • Power Automate to automatically generate reports based on input

Any help, or guidance would be useful.

Best regards,

John

I would search the Microsoft training site for the "App in a Day" classes they run. They have you create an app that is very similar to what you are asking. If you look in the description it should tell you the app you will be creating, just make sure it matches because they may have more than one.

Daniel Christian has a video where you can see a similar app

A little update on this matter:

My company has a Microsoft E3 subscription, which doesn't allow creating custom tables in Dataverse, which is a shame since my coding skills are low, and according to my findings, didn't need me to investigate any further regarding APIs (which I still don't know exactly what is).

My current track now is to see if I'm allowed to create an Azure SQL database, before I eventually will have to resign and disband the whole PA-idea.

    Additional update:

No luck with the Azure SQL database either, since my company doesn't support individuals creating databases.

This is not looking promising, but I think I will try to make a "proof-of-concept" using Excel as database.
