Currency Formatting in an If statement

Help please!!

 

I have a form where I have 3 fields - one is total , paid and payment status. The total is entered manually, the payment status drives the paid field by adding the total value in the paid field when the status is fully paid. However, I am having issues in formatting the total paid field when is not fully paid.

I have set a var in the total field and added in the default for the total amount. Thats works ok -

But when I get to the total paid amount where I already have a default value, I can't find a way to get the formatting to work.

Can pleeease anyone help?

    Text(If(Stage1_Status_1.Value="Paid",STG1_Total_Amount_1),"[$-en-US]#,##0.00")

    No, it doesn't work when I manually type the amount (not fully paid). Any other idea?
