Screen recorded flow failing when trying to select and copy credentials out of a word document

Hi,

I've run the screen recorder and walked through all the steps in the desktop recorded flow but when I play it back it fails on the part where It opens a word document, at the point where I selected a username. It seems it can't find the place where I selected and copied the username.

Perhaps there is a better way of getting the user credentials.

Any advice would be welcome please.

Maybe I'm not understanding what I need to do when recording my screen. Do I simply click through all the actions or do I need to tag each UI element and name it?

I would appreciate your advice as I'm lost.

Hi,

It is not easy to say what is going wrong with your flow. Because there are many things can be the problem.

Recorder is not always working as expected, sometimes it can miss your steps while recording. Please make sure there are all steps you have from recording.
How many Word documents / instances are opened when you run your flow? Can your flow work with multiple opened word documents / instances? You have to check that.
Do you have multiple screens?
Do you use different word document and user name from your recording steps? If it is different word document and user name, then you have to edit the UI element to make it works with all word document and user name.

Hi Mike,

You're right. I didn't provide enough information to make any progress. I've decided to break down this flow very simple steps and only a few at a time, test and work from there.

I recorded the following actions:

1. double click on desktop shortcut to the the website I want to login to- works until this point.
2. I click on the username text box of the website to input my username- it fails at this point.

here is the flow steps until I've logged in but I can't get past step 3:

Robin.Core.ActionException: Failed to write in textbox (textbox wasn't found)
at Robin.Modules.UIAutomation.Actions.PopulateTextFieldInWindow.Execute(ActionContext context)
at Robin.Runtime.Engine.ActionRunner.RunAction(String action, Dictionary`2 inputArguments, Dictionary`2 outputArguments, IActionStatement statement)

Please help! Thank you.

What might be happening is that, it is taking some time for the element to occur, Please use "Wait for web page content" action, and specify the max wait time for that element, it will ensure that next action is performed after that only

Thanks a lot will give it a try and will let you know.

Some more questions:

1. Can the Desktop recorder record actions on my Web browser? Should I rather use the web recorder for that?

2. If I start of on the desktop and transition to a web browser do I need to record and capture the first set of actions with the DT recorder and then record and capture the second set of actions with the web recorder?

3. When I click on the UI elements when recording, can I simply do all the clicks how I would normally do if if I was working or do I need to click ctrl and click on the UI element for the recorder to identify it or do I simply hover over the UI elements until the red box appears over it? do I need to click on the Divs in the web page to orientate the mouse before click on the smaller UI elements? Sorry for all the questions. I'm not sure how all the minutiae works.
