I am encountering the following error when attempting to edit a topic in Microsoft Copilot Studio:
“Because this topic is managed and non-customizable, it can't be modified.”
This occurs when I try to update the instructions / conversation logic of a topic that appears under custom topics, but Copilot Studio blocks all edits and displays the above message.
Is this default by design in the production environment or is there a setup which can be changed by the admin team.
If a topic is marked as “managed and non-customizable”, it means it was deployed from a managed solution or is system-provided, so it’s locked and can’t be edited directly
You can’t change those topics in-place. The usual workaround is to create a new custom topic and recreate the logic there, or check if an unmanaged version exists in the solution layer.
The error:
usually indicates that the topic is part of a managed solution in Microsoft Copilot Studio / Dataverse.
When a topic is deployed through a managed solution, its components become read-only in the target environment by design.
