Collecttions, Galleries and Editing and Saving Collections

Hello,

Many of you have been tremendous help to me recently, so I am back for more. My app has a form, partially shown here, and one of the pieces of data collected is RAID (Risk, Assumption, Issue, Decision) as a dropdown list.

This form is for project challenges and any given project can have up to four challenges, so I am using a collection to collect the data:

The red arrow shows the collection item for RAID, which is different than the other (text) inputs, as RAID uses ***.Selected as opposed to ***.Selected.Text. This provides a record to the collection, which troubles me, but it works okay, and writes to the SharePoint list fine. If I use something other than this I get an error message and the collection won't save back to SP list.

The problem is I write this collection to a new sheet as a gallery and have an edit area on that sheet where the user can review their challenges and edit them prior to saving to SharePoint. The problem is I can't get the edit form on this new sheet to show the selected RAID, as it says it expects a record but it is text instead. I can't get the gallery RAID value to show in this edit field either.

Can anyone help with this problem? I would greatly appreciate suggestions.

Craig

    Hi @Anonymous ,

    This is because your syntax

    ChallNewRaidValue.Selected

    produces a Record rather than a Text value.

    You need

    ChallNewRaidValue.Selected.xxxx

    where xxxx depends on the Items property of ChallNewRaidValue.

    When you type ChallNewRaidValue.Selected. (note second dot), valid values will come up underneath. For some guidance of what they mean: -

    • If your Items are Choices(ListName.FieldName) - a Choices or Lookup field), the reference will be ChallNewRaidValue.Selected.Value
    • If they are Distinct( . . .  .), it will be ChallNewRaidValue.Selected.Result
    • The other option is when they are based on a field value in a list (other than Distinct), then it will be ChallNewRaidValue.Selected.FieldName (actual field name)

    Thank you WarrenBetz,

    That ***.Selected.Value solved all problems save one. That is, now the collection won't save to my SharePoint list, and I get the following message:

    If you can provide assistance with this last hurdle I think that would do it - Solution would be achieved!

    @Anonymous ,

    You now need to add (instead) to Collection value as a record

    {RAID:ChallNewRaidValue.Selected}

    exactly as shown with its own set of {} brackets.

    Here is what happens when I do that:

    I think I did what you said to do.

    @Anonymous ,

    Dangers of free-typing without properly engaging brain . . .now corrected.

    {RAID:ChallNewRaidValue.Selected}

    Same basic issue; many error messages.

    @Anonymous ,

    I thought that would work, but try instead

    RAID:{Value:ChalNewRaid.Selected.Value}

    Nope. Still errors. So this is the message I get in the diagnostics. Is there a way to turn this problem on its head and change the data source (SharePoint list) so the RAID column expects type 'Text'? At the moment it is a 'Choice' column.

    @Anonymous ,

    The syntax

    RAID:{Value:ChalNewRaid.Selected.Value}

    is correct for a Choice field Patch in SharePoint assuming ChalNewRaid.Selected.Value is also valid - I have just tested this here successfully. You can also change the SharePoint field to Text without losing any data and then simply Patch the Text.

    Warren,

    It is interesting that you mention it is the correct syntax for Patch. I am not using Patch; could that be the issue? I am using the time-saving method demonstrated by Shane Young when the column names in the collection are the exact same as in the SP list:
    Collect('IBP Status -Challenges', collChallenges). If that is the issue, well, it hasn't proven to be time-saving at all! 🙂
