As of sometime today, 2019-04-05, with around version 3.19034.12, it appears as if the (once) Preview Feature "Use Column Display Names" is now the mandatory, unchangeable default setting for new PowerApps.

Practically, this seems to mean that:

Using column display names is supposed to be the standard.
Auto-completion only works for Column/DisplayNames!
Using the correct logical name of columns works, but only the complete, correct logical name.
There is no more auto-completion for logical column names.
Partial column names (which are correct except for completness) are underlined red as errors.
A simple workaround is to make lots of copies of your older PowerApps.
As of now, I will not create new PowerApps but only edit copies of older PowerApps.
If you work in any similar to me, you will want to keep (even more) unedited versions of some your old PowerApps (for the purpose of avoiding mandatory added features) now.
As an example see this screenshot from an PowerApp initally created with version 3.19031.13

Needless to say, that for me, after I already posted this post:

Recently, within PowerApps, there are some updates in the "Use Column Display Name" option and the "Use GUID type instead of GUID string" option within Advanced settings of App settings of an app.

Precisely what we have done is to remove the Preview switch for new apps and existing apps that already had it turned on, which has been the default for a while. If you have an app with one of these features already turned off, the switch will still appear so that you can turn it on. Once turned on, saved, and reloaded the feature can no longer be turned off but you can revert to a previous saved version of the app in the app portal. Someday we will force all apps to use these features but wanted to provide a grace period to minimize disruption.

Currently, PowerApps removes the Preview switch for new apps and existing apps that already had "Use Column Display Name" option and the "Use GUID type instead of GUID string" option turned on.

Note: You could still use logic name within your app which have turn on "Use Column Display Name" option Preview feature already.
