Hello,
I am pretty new to Power Apps so I'm a bit struggling with the subject mentioned topic.
First let me describe what I'm trying to achieve. I am creating a few Power Apps Portal pages that are accessible by authenticated users only. In each page, there should be a section that displays documents from an existing SharePoint document library. It could be one document library with different views setup for different portal pages, or one document library per portal page.
Eventually these pages will sit in an existing Portal, in a production environment that also has Dynamic 365. But while developing, I have created a sandbox environment with database in my own test tenant which does not have Dynamics 365. I assume the database is a Dataverse database as it contains about 240 tables with names like account, adx_*, contact, msdyn_* ...etc. But again, I'm not familar with Dataverse.
The products I have in my test tenant are:
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard - This includes SharePoint Plan 1 and I have created a site with several document libraries to be used with this development.
- Power Apps per app plan - Don't know if I need this at all, but purchased just in case required.
- And some other free ones such as Power Automate Free, Power BI (free)...etc.
I've been trying to follow Manage SharePoint documents in order to setup integration between Power Apps with SharePoint. But either the article is not clear enough, or I don't have enough Power Apps experience to understand it. I also find a lot of MS docs often contain links all over the place instead of keeping all information in one page, which makes it very difficult to follow and causes readers to be lost in the forest of link trees.
Step 1 of that document describes what I need to do, instead of "how" to do. At the end of it is a link to Set up model-driven apps to use SharePoint Online. But it links to a page called Set up customer engagement apps (What???) to use SharePoint Online instead. (Fine, I guess a 'customer engagement app' is an example of 'model-driven app'.) Then in this document, it has another link to a YouTube video called Connect Dynamics 365 to SharePoint Online. I followed the video until 1:40, where it asks to set which record types can have documents associated with them. This is where I started to get lost. Do I need to select any record types for what I'm trying to achieve?
I consulted with my colleage, who fairly quickly told me that it was because I don't have Dynamic 365 in my environment so I could not follow the instructions in the MS docs. I do have doubts about this because the path to the doc is: Docs / Power Platform / Power Apps / Portals / Configure document storage in portals / Manage SharePoint documents. It is not in the path of Dynamics 365 docs, and it does not mention Dynamic 365 as a pre-requisit, although I believe Power Apps and Dynamics 365 often work together.
So my questions are:
- Was my colleague correct in saying that I do need Dynamic 365 to achieve what I need to achieve?
- Is the Microsoft Doc actually describing what I need, but just that I don't understand it due to my lack of Power Apps exprience?
- Or am I just totally off track thinking I can achieve what I need?
I am hoping someone out there can help me out here. I've googled a lot but the results were either pointing back to the MS Doc, or people showing how to display SharePoint content in Canvas apps instead of portal pages.
If you are able to help me, or even point me to a place that might describe the fundamentals of Power Apps, Dataverse, or even Dynamics 365 more clear than Microsoft Dos, I'd really appreciate it!
Apologies for the long post. 😅
Kind regards
